Sitting in a cloud at Piha

Today we decided to visit the new, extremely delayed but finally here, cafe at Piha.  A group of people who thought Piha could use another cafe decided about four years to open it, but various appeals led by local opposition meant it only opened on Wednesday.  It was a gloomy cloudy day, but we had another open home so had to evacuate the house.

We set off over the Waitakares, and were almost immediately plunged into cloud.  The cloud was so low it was spooky, and visibility was about 100m in places.   We could only guess we were nearing the sea, because we couldn’t see anything at all.

Piha itself was just below the cloud, and the new cafe was lovely.  Lulu adopted a red plastic horse for the duration of the visit, and Madeleine managed the play area with her usual efficiency.  The eggs benedict came with optional asparagus, which was a delicious innovation, and the girls were well catered for with toast and eggs, which the kitchen were happy to adapt.  We even stayed for a second coffee, we were having such a lovely time.

We stopped on the way out of Piha at the lookout.   That’s the Tasman Sea, in a cloud.
