Oh no, she’s found the phone

I was tidying up the kitchen tonight, when the phone rang. A little voice said “Is Madeleine there?”. Thats the first time I’ve ever heard that. Her very first phone call, from a school friend. Madeleine was terribly excited and they chatted for over 20 minutes. She even threw Lucia out of her room while she chatted on the phone, like a proper little teenager. Which she won’t be for another 7 years.

On Sunday night Lulu asked me, “Mummy, when I grow up, will I have a baby?”.
“Well, if you want to” I replied.
“But how” she said.
“Well, that’s a long story, maybe we’ll talk about it tomorrow”.
On Monday lunchtime I scampered up Queen Street to Borders and found Lets Talk, a book explaining the whole process, without unnecessary detail and very factually.
That night, with heavy heart, I dragged myself home and announced I had a new book to read to them. They climbed on my lap, and we launched in. And read it, and finished. And read it again, after which they climbed off my lap and ran off to play. They weren’t bothered, or particularly interested.

We got a letter last week with Lucia’s school start date, in July 2010. I almost reached for the smelling salts. My youngest, my little baby, is only seven months away from starting school. I felt faintly geriatric for a few minutes, but then quite excited at the thought of her starting school. I know she’ll love it.
Let me reassure you that as the girls get older the questions and answers will become more complicated and issues more difficult to avoid. That is until one day they will wake up to the fact that you really do not know anything and they stop asking, and what you do say embarrasses them. So be rest assured eventually you can get even!
