Ok, now I feel sorry for Melissa Lee

Oh I know she was a total goose and made a mess of the entire Mt Albert election campaign.  She couldn’t stop stuffing her feet in her mouth or digging herself holes.  But at the end, standing there in front of a depressed little crowd giving her concession speech, she looked so miserable it was impossible not to feel a little sympathy. Plus, once she had clearly lost the election (which would be about one day after the campaign started)  she appeared to be deserted by the National Party, eager to distance itself from the slow moving car crash that the campaign had become.  And that was unforgivable treatment by her party.  A few senior Cabinet ministers should have visited and supported her, John Key should have shown his face far more often.

Once again, I felt like my children had given a useful lesson in how adults should behave.  My six year old Madeleine become a stroppy little madam this weekend.    Nothing I said was right, my stupidity was apparently absolute.  She wanted to go out in the rain, she wanted to lie around and watch endless TV when it was sunny outside.   We took the girls to Snowplanet and after a small play in the snow she threw a massive tantrum because she wanted to ski.

At the end of the weekend, pocket money time arrived.  She only got half her usual amount on account of all the attitude and misbehavior.   And do you know what she did?  She happily accepted her punishment, and wandered off to her room, saying as she went, “Yes I have been very rude this weekend haven’t ?  I wonder why.  I guess I just forgot how to be nice.”

And that was it.  No tantrum, and no arguments.

So thats why I have a better opinion of Melissa Lee now than I did 24 hours ago.  She accepted her punishment, and she congratulated her successful opponent.  Just like adults should.

PS – if you’re wondering, I voted for David Shearer.  The best candidate won.

Oh you have a heart after all. I did not see the speech but I did fel sorry for her all along. Seasoned campaigners can get it wrong and she was such a novice. National knew it was a tough fight they should have put up a tough person, or at least given her more support as you say.
At least she beat the Greens, Russel Norman did not have a clue about the electorate and it was rather arrogant of him to think he could represent it.
Good old Maddi I wish a few of our parents had her wisdom. I have just had a parent cross with me because I could not solve her problem between midnight when i replied to her email and 8.00 am when she sent the next one. As it involved talking to other people I thought that was quite a big ask.
Well you can’t please emall and I won’t be having a paddy ’cause after working after mid-night I do not have the energy.
    have a gr8 day. Mxxx
